View Green Geeks Plans

GreenGeeks have been around since 2008, are proudly independent, and as the name suggests are all about eco-hosting for WordPress sites.

For our GreenGeeks review we signed up with their EcoStarter Plan which starts at $2.95/mth.

GreenGeeks Provisioning and Installation

Signing up I had my first frustration with new account approvals and provisioning only happening during business hours in the US. This isn’t a show stopper of course, but something to be aware of if you are outside the US (and in a hurry!). Once provisioned it was all very familiar with Cpanel and a 1-click installer.

GreenGeeks Systems and Support

We can’t review GreenGeeks without talking about their eco creds…GreenGeeks is an EPA Green Power Partner and claim to be the most eco-friendly WordPress host on the planet. They purchase wind energy credits to the tune of 3x the energy they consume. If going green is important to you then GreenGeeks is a good choice.

On the service side of things, they offer live chat 24/7, and phone support 9am-midnight EST (finishing earlier on the weekends).

GreenGeeks Load Test

GreenGeeks’ performance in our latest round of Load Impact testing was really strong. The load test shows very fast and consistent performance throughout the test. GreenGeeks average user loadtime for our test was 0.612 seconds which is an improvement on the last results (and second only to iPage), with no discernible impact on load speed even as the number of concurrent users climbed to 100. At the same time the test recorded no server request failures either which caps off a brilliant result.

Interestingly their Pingdom test results below fared slightly worse than the last round of testing, but are still very good comparatively so they remain one of our top 3 recommendations. Particularly if you are interested in the environmental impact of your hosting, Green Geeks are an exceptionally good choice.

GreenGeeks Page Speed & Uptime

GreenGeeksResult
YSlow Score88
West Coast Load Time1.45s
East Coast Load Time1.01s
Average Page Load Time1.23s
GreenGeeks Uptime100%

GreenGeeks’ average page load speed as recorded by Pingdom has increased to 1.23s since we last tested but this is still a very respectable score and their uptime in the latest period was 100% which is as good as it gets. Their Y Slow score remained at 88 which is first equal (along with Bluehost) amongst all the hosts we’ve tested..

About GreenGeeks

GreenGeeks has been around since 2008 and hosts a couple hundred thousand sites. It’s not the cheapest option for hosting, as users pay the “green premium” that comes with products and services touting their eco credentials.

In this case GreenGeeks has a “Green Mission” statement on its site, which explains that the company supports going green and initiatives to reduce energy consumption on the Internet.

Their “GreenGreeks Eco Site” plan offers unlimited disk space, unlimited bandwidth, unlimited domain names and unlimited emails for each domain, and unlimited databases. For all customers the company provides cPanel, including the Fantastico script library for one-click script installation, which has Joomla, Drupal and WordPress, among others.

GreenGeeks also offers SoHo Launch and RV Site Builder as template-based site builder programs for novice users. The company offers tutorials to help users on such topics as how to set up email accounts, how to install script options on the site and other common issues.

The company offers reseller hosting services for businesses to offer clients, as well as the standard VPS hosting for enterprise-level clients, with such options as Web Host Manager. The company provides all their own customer service with no outsourcing.

FAQ’s

Do I pay for my domain name if I get a hosting package?

No, they’ll register or transfer your domain name free of charge as part of your web hosting package. They emphasize domain registration, in fact.

What apps can I use to build my site?

You will gain access to over 150+ ready to install applications like WordPress with a single click.

What’s the control panel on offer?

It’s all based on cPanel, which is pretty much the desirable industry standard. Their enhanced control panel makes it relatively easy for you to manage your website, emails, files and other stuff.

Do they do backups?

Sure do. Your hosting account is backed up nightly.

How about dedicated hosting, what’s that like?

All of their dedicated servers use Server-grade Intel processors, memory, hard drives and equipment. Their servers are also offset 300% by wind energy making them not only green, but carbon reducing. That means their prices are a bit higher than comparable hosting plans, since you pay the “green tax” that comes with eco-branded services.

What’s the VPS hosting deal?

You will be able to control all aspects of your VPS through their proprietary VPS management portal.Your VPS will come pre-installed with cPanel/WHM allowing you to manage web hosting accounts, email addresses, MySQL databases and more. They back up data on your VPS nightly, and once your order has been verified, your VPS will be ready to use in less than 60 seconds.

Is there an uptime guarantee for VPS too?

With their enterprise level hardware, datacenter and monitoring systems, they guarantee that your VPS comes with 99.9% service uptime.

Are they fully managed?

Yes, customers who make use of cPanel/WHM will receive full management of their VPS. Installation of non-cPanel supported applications will not be supported by their technical support. And as a VPS customer you will gain full root access to your server.

What’s that free eNom reseller deal they offer?

They’ll also give you access to your own eNom Domain Reseller Account, which company officials peg as “a $995 value.” You will be able to register, transfer and manage domain names for your customers, and you’ll also be able to sell add-ons such as SSL certificates, WHOIS ID Protect and more.

With the reseller hosting, who provides the support for my customers?

You as the reseller will be responsible for providing support to your customers. GreenGeeks will provide you, the reseller with support 24/7 via e-mail, live chat and telephone. You will also have access to their Knowledge base, video tutorials & more. And you’ll be able to assign as much or as little resources to your customers as you like, such as disk space, bandwidth, domains, e-mail accounts, etc, including offering Unlimited plans, limited by the resources on your reseller hosting plan.

I just joined up with GreenGeeks. There are so many companies out there doing very similar work but this was the only group I found that really has a purpose outside of just making money. Cool to see their focus on the environment and keep customers informed around sustainability.

I made a mistake in my order process and purchased the wrong package by accident. I submitted a ticket over the weekend and this group had me fixed up within 24 hours to fix the mistake that I made.

I have asked for help on a few items and am always getting responses in super fast time. This is critical for my account and also for the customers that I support.

Would definitely recommend GreenGeeks for hosting/reselling needs.

  2. My experience with GreenGeeks is straight forward! Great customer support, and an easy to use interface. Unlike other host who pollute our environment via coal power… GreenGeeks relies on wind energy instead.

If you want to leave the company and you want to take the accounts of your customers (reseller), you have to pay $ 5 per house account or you can not take them. they have the backup service disabled.

  4. Aurovrata V. says:

Overall no complains with GreenGeeks and as the name clearly suggests, I chose them for their effort to reduce the carbon footprint of their service. They green credential pages also highlights other steps implemented within their office to make a difference.
Service wise, we’ve never had any major issues and our 10 shared hosting accounts a couple of client specific accounts worked seamlessly with good cpanel access.

  5. Had one issue post-setup and it was resolved under 5 minutes. Also best pricing for my current usage and least painful setup I ever had.

And I’ve been in the industry for over 5 years with all sorts of hosting platforms tried out. Aaand you do something good for the nature, got nothing bad to say about these guys!

Green Geeks has a disgusting way to do business:
The hosting service is fine… If you want to keep it for life !

First of all there is no cancellation / stop button or form. You have to contact them so that they send you a link to a hidden cancellation page.
So, I contacted them to cancel the renewal of the hosting service, a day before my previous contract ended.
    But apparently, it’s not enough!
Not only had they already taken money from my account, when I notified told them I wanted to cancel, they started telling me “OK, please fill in this form.” and “Yes, you’ll get your money back”
But it appears that there were more hidden things! In the end, they offered to cut the service and still keep my money. In my dictionary, that is theft.

They are well aware of my unhappiness and still did nothing to make things right.

    1. Hi Sandrine, that sounds like a terrible experience. Honestly I am very surprised to hear that this happened. Considering you started the cancellation process before the renewal date I would expect them to refund your renewal payment, and it sounds like they did say they would. What has happened since that has changed this? Why are they not refunding you given you wanted to cancel before the renewal?

      1. Tania says:

According to their terms and conditions (https://www.greengeeks.com/kb/2367/canceling-prior-to-your-account-renewal-date/), you need to start the cancellation process 7 business days before the renewal date, make sure they receive the cancellation request, confirm by replying to the email that they send and this must be 5 business days before the renewal date.
It’s a shame that the company chooses to use this tactic to retain customers, even if they are kicking and screaming in the process.
I have a reminder set a month before my service expires to make sure I don’t have any problems and if I do I have plenty of time to resolve them.

        1. Thanks Tania. This is good to know. Makes me want to investigate the policies with each of the big hosts and see how much they vary.

We annoyed with GG occasionally. They aren’t the cheapest, all hosts’ 1st line support guys seem scripted to assume the client is an idiot, and there is always a bit of a lottery with shared hosting…

    But…

We rarely have to contact them. If we do then once we demonstrate to the 1st line that we know what we are doing, they are very quick to advance issues to the engineers. The engineers always seem to resolve problems fast, and communicate really well. Their shared hosting is consistently among the best that we benchmark for our clients’ sites.

Compared to other hosts that we have to deal with they are fantastic. They rarely try to upsell us, they promptly resolve issues, and we have had none of the disasters that we’ve seen on clients’ sites hosted by other hosts. And sure, the green idea is a plus.

We always use GG for our own sites, and have done for a few years now, and are happy to tell our clients of our positive experiences. Our only reservation would be that they seem to be set up for users who are quite techie – there isn’t the same level of online documentation that some bigger hosts provide.

Dealing with a hosting company is rarely fun. But every interaction we have with other hosts seems to remind us how much better GG are. So far, we’re loving these guys.

  8. + Lightning Fast Chat Sessions opened every single time I need assistance 24/7. Time from pressing start on chat to on session with team member average 5-10 seconds. Usually closer to 5.

+ Always willing to help me and check things out on the back end just to be sure everything is working.

+ So-Far in over a year never any issues with downtime, poor customer service, non-responses to requests.

+ Extremely helpful in recently helping me transfer and resolve issues with domain mail exchange handling over to Microsoft Office 365 Exchange Servers

    – Very Limited on Domain Purchase Services they provide, but not much of a problem for me as their hosting is my main concern.

    – Can seem a bit pricey compared to other providers, but based on the level of service I have received to date it is well worth it.

Recently completely wiped my site and just messing around with different WordPress themes, so no real content on it right now, but will provide address to prove hosting through them.

Absolute rip off merchants when it comes to the ‘free’ domain registration as they charge unreasonable ‘expenses’ instead. Upon cancellation, no refund of these either. Appears from another review site I’m not the only one to be hit by unreasonable and hidden charges, and only partial cancellation refunds. Avoid at all costs.

  10. Tiffany C says:

Green Geeks offers all that great stuff to be found at any host – but better and more responsible. In 5 ways they topple competition and surpassed my expectations over the top 4 major hosting companies out there which I have tried. My 5 cents: 1. Their response time is CRAZY fast (saving you time and money) and they actually are intuitive humans available 24 hours a day 2. High level talent – knowledge & capability and the fact they apply it in intelligent ways and 3. great value, willing to help you find ways to save – total lack of nonsense when we need something including bonus – they never need excuses, nor speak to us as if we work there. 4. the abundance of common sense and dignity – total class act from billing, sales, support and even the dashboard. Finally, #5 – the teams and systems are designed with humans in mind, work with integrity and are respectful. They are purpose driven and get the job done effectively without using repeat jargon, overcharging or using flippant sales driven behavior in the process.

We chose GG because we represent and promote sustainable developments, we create, consult and produce sustainable spaces and places and communications. It would not make sense for us to have hosting with a service that was a part of the problem and not a part of the solution.

Just because a company calls themselves green doesnt mean they understand the impact of culture on sustainability’s ability to take hold in industry and lifestyle. GreenGeeks goes beyond energy by the culture with which they communicate and operate. They build dignity and value and from that – ultimately all benefit, this is a sign of success for responsible business. Glad to write this review as we have been meaning to do so for some time. Thanks for asking.

    – The whole eCo Event Source team.

    Thanks G.G.
