Arvixe have been providing services since their founding in 2003. In 2014 they were acquired by EIG (also owns Bluehost and Hostgator).

For our Arvixe review we signed up for the cheapest entry level Personal Class plan.

Arvixe Provisioning and Installation

Signing up with Arvixe was fast and easy. They provide a very standard hosting service with the usual cPanel interface and the Softaculous script installer which makes it drop dead easy to install WordPress.

Arvixe Systems and Support

Support might be Arvixe’ archilles heel. The forums are full of complaints in recent months and even Arvixe themselves acknowledged the challenges on their support blog, although that has now been taken down. It seems in the wake of the EIG buyout the transition was a bit wonky with performance and support suffering.

In fairness, the performance in our latest round of testing was solid which I think reflects the strength of the EIG infrastructure that Arvixe has presumably migrated all customers to…

Arvixe Load Testing Results

Arvixe’ performance in the latest round of testing was very strong. The load times for each virtual user session started out well and remained very consistent as the number of concurrent users increased. This suggests that they are  employing some smart network caching technology to quickly serve regularly requested resources, and the testing recorded no failed requests on the server. It is great to see this kind of performance on an entry level shared plan.

The pattern in Arvixe results is pretty similar to Hostgator which makes us think they may be hosted on the same infrastructure (also owned by EIG).

Arvixe Page Speed & Uptime

ArvixeResult
YSlow Score83
West Coast Load Time0.92s
East Coast Load Time0.828s
Average Page Load Time0.874s
Arvixe Uptime100%

Arvixe scored 83 on the YSlow scale which is amongst the best scores and consistent since our last round of testing.

They also showed a fairly low spread in average home page load times between the East and West coast with an overall average of under one second (0.874s) which is really strong and a seriously good improvement over the previous result which was 1.28s.

Uptime isn’t an issue for Arvixe either at 100% over the previous period according to Pingdom. Seemingly all EIG acquisitions go through a very rough patch post acquisition as they are assimilated into the EIG infrastructure, but Arvixe seems to have come out the other side with the good performance numbers.

More About Arvixe

Arvixe is a web hosting company that’s been in business since 2003, offering Linux, Mac and Windows hosting, with VPS, managed dedicated hosting, reseller and personal plans as well as a fairly standard business plan.

As with most hosting services aimed at the small business and individual market, Arvixe’s stock plan offers unlimited disk space, data transfer and email accounts, as well as a free site builder tool, free domain (for life, with the purchase of a hosting plan), free online store and control panel. The 24/7 US-based phone support is available for an additional fee.

For blogs the company offers WordPress, Expression Engine and Movable Type hosting, and nopCommerce and Magento for e-commerce sites. For video sharing there’s ClipBucket and PHPMotion hosting on offer, and Joomla, Drupal and Concrete5, in addition to WordPress, for CMS options.

All US and Canadian accounts are afforded a voucher for Google Adwords, and American accounts qualify for a Bing/Yahoo! voucher.

The company offers CubeCart for a shopping cart option, and buySAFE, a free service to help gauge merchant reliability and online trustworthiness. It’s backed by a bond guarantee, and provides a seal for site administrators to place on their site.

Arvixe FAQ’s

What’s their cancellation policy?

If you want to cancel anytime in the first 60 days, they’ll give you a full refund, no questions asked.

What’s the uptime guarantee?

They guarantee 99.9% uptime, and say that if at any time during a month it drops below that, you qualify for a refund on that month’s hosting fees.

And what’s the customer service support?

They offer U.S.-based customer service and technical support from live representatives available 24/7, 365 days a year.

Do they offer help for transferring my site?

Yes they do — when moving your site over from another web host, their technical support representatives will help you move it. They’ll transfer the site, databases — even the domain name for you, all at no cost. Check out all the details on their site.

Do they offer discounts for multiple sites?

You can get up to 50% off for life on all hosting account orders by hosting all your domains and accounts through them. Purchase the accounts through their process and the discounts will show up automatically.

What VPS do they offer?

Their Virtual Private Server or VPS Hosting comes standard with basic performance guarantees, along with the exclusive environment offered by their dedicated servers. Frankly, their VPS Hosting plans are designed as a stepping stone between the shared hosting and dedicated server offerings.

Do they offer dedicated hosting?

Yes, and the service that goes along with it — including 100% server management. You don’t need server administration knowledge, as they handle the administration of the server for you. Simply choose the server and add an operating system and a control panel to your package to use their 24/7/365 full management for your dedicated server, as well as 24/7 dedicated support.

How often do they perform security updates for the managed dedicated servers?

They perform nightly security updates — all managed dedicated servers are set up for nightly security updates and will be monitored for performance during and after these updates by their technical support staff.

Is there a cloud hosting option?

There is. It’s called their CLOUDCLASS platform, and gives you access to your server’s resources, with full control over your web applications to make any performance and security changes needed. The datacenter uses redundant power, tier-1 providers, SAS 70 Type II Certification and more, as well as true Hypervisor-based technology to provide users with a true dedicated hosting environment on the server.

Cloud hosting comes in either Linux or Windows, with cPanel/WHM control panel for the Linux cloud and WebSitePanel to manage your Windows cloud.

One review on “Arvixe Reviews

  1. Upon a recommendation of a colleague, I moved to Arvixe over four years ago. Online since 1995, I had never had a website down over 24 hours. Sadly this changed with Arvixe, not once but mulitple times sites or servers went down–one period was over a week before it was resolved. A big customer service fail.

When I first moved over, it was because my old host was not keeping up with technology changes. Arvixe had a good price point and customer service was awesome.

Sadly, this is no longer the case, once it started to decline it got to the point that I couldn’t stand it any more and so I moved to another host that is not owned by EIG and whose fast response time and customer service practices are more to my liking.

While at Arvixe, my servers were changed again and again (something like 5 times–the last one I requested).

Recently I found my sites still on at least one old server, definitely not to my liking.

During my hosting with Arvixe there seemed to be a glut of hacking events. Seriously difficult to clean up. My college who is a reseller found his private server was hit multiple times as well.

In many cases a hosting company can keep a customer for the long term if the customer service and quick actions to fix issues are common practice, this is no longer the case at Arvixe.

I noticed that after Endurance International Group acquired Arvixe, things continued to plummet to new lows. I had originally planned to delay my jump to another host–but glad I moved away as more issues and other changes so far have left me unimpressed.
