According to recent facts on ethics, few interesting and rest disturbing, or lack of them in the organization has been revealed. Among the 120 million who dwell into an organization and over the year, almost half of them have come across some kind of first hand ethical breach.

What are these people actually doing?
Let us explore few common reasons behind the breach of ethics:
- Misuse of company time: this can take various forms, from showing more hours in the worksheet than the actual hours worked to covering up for the team members who came in late. It even includes doing personal business from the workplace and that does not mean calling home to check up on their family. This is completely unacceptable, but focusing on answering emails from potential clients for your after working hours for freelancing jobs, is not so much.
- Theft: from adultering expense reports to being more than their actual amount to taking out the office properties with you to your home for personal use, employee theft is one of the most growing forms of workplace crimes nowadays. One out of every 30 employees is caught stealing from the office leaving everyone to wonder how many were not caught.
- Lying: this is more inclined towards managers who are lying to their employees and team members. It is shockingly very common, and destroys the hope for trustworthy culture in the workplace resulting in lowered morale and affected productivity.
- Abusive behaviour: almost everyone at some point of the time in their career has worked under the bad supervisor or abusive manager. But it does not mean that they are right.
- Cyberslacking: cyslacking is regarding violating the internet policy of a company, assuming that they have one. It is another way of misusing the time of the company. However, 64% of employees spend time surfing websites which has nothing to do with their jobs in organization.
These are all quite straightforward reasons of why things are in most part clearly unethical. But what really happens when things get even darker? Just for an example, taking credit for somebody else’s work. It’s rare when every one in a team put the same level of effort into a team project.
For instance, you have a team of five members and only 3 of them did all the work while the other two did not contribute much, how should that be accounted for? Is that unethical the two others taking the credit for the work they didn’t do?
Should the other team member bring it to notice who did the work and who did not? Both the way seems a situation which will lead to resentment and destroy the team morale.
It is in cases like these where the answers are not clear enough that it is vital for people to know what and how to think and react ethically. After all, ethics are present as a kind of guidelines to our day to day behavioural course to ensure we are abiding by the norms, principles, and values.
