Newswire is our latest theme. Designed with local news sites and newsy blogs in mind.
Taking a lead from news sites like the Huffington Post we’ve incorporated a big ‘ol slider on the home page. By default this slides the latest posts, but you can also use the core WP ‘sticky posts’ feature to flag those particular posts you want to feature in the slider with bold headlines and large format images.
The theme also features two customizable navigation menus, and we’ve added the ability to choose between a range of fonts, change the color scheme, upload your own logo and even add banners in the header and sidebar without adding any plugins. For the banners look for the two banner templates (Appearance > Edit), to which you can easily add your banner code to populate the header and sidebar banner spots.
The Newswire theme is released under the GPL V2 license.

Hello Kris
Thanks for the quick response.
What I mean is have a specific featured image geared towards specific categories that will show up in the slider when the article is about that certain topic ie the news article is about sports so it the slide show the picture will be a basketball team etc…
Thanks Kris.
Hi Aaron, that’s a template customization that goes beyond the level of support we can provide here in the comments. We can help with simple CSS customizations and of course any bug fixes, but for changes like this I recommend you try Elto or Codeable.
Hello
Just need to know how to set a featured image in the slider to pull up for each category? I.e. When the slider is showing a sports story it will pull up a image of basketball players etc.
Thank You.
I am not really getting what you mean. If you want to add a featured image in each post, you can just set a featured for each post.
For some reason I can’t scroll down on this site.
http://alc-noticias.net/es/quienes-somos/politica-editorial-de-alc/
Can anybody help?
thanks 🙂
This code,
html, body {height: 100% !important;overflow: hidden !important;}
, is the reason why you can’t scroll down. So changeoverflow: hidden !important;
tooverflow: visible!important;
thanks a lot for your help! 🙂
Hello Guys,
Thanks for the quick response.
Just wondering how can I slim down the whole theme a few
pixels to make it less bulky looking?
Hope to hear from you soon.
Thank You.
Hi Aaron, there isn’t a ‘slimness’ setting you can adjust. Each element is controlled independently so you’ll need to go through the CSS and make adjustments to specific elements as you like. We made a video on how to identify what parts of the CSS control what elements here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zSUIm1KrPs
If you need some more thorough support that we can provide here in the comments you could try Codeable or Elto.
Ugh, just figured it out. I’m retarded. Must set posts as sticky for them to appear in the slideshow. I think previously it was just set to the most recent.
Also, the FB likes per each article are no longer showing up and on the home page, our Instagram and Pinterest plugins are also now missing.
Hello –
Since the latest 1.0.7 update, the slideshow function is no longer working for me.
Please advise.
Thanks,
Grace
Is there any way to get rid of the story preview on the home page (leaving just the headline and the photo for each post?). It is annoying that sometimes the preview is three lines and other times it is four. It knocks the columns out of alignment.
Thanks!
Download Simple Custom CSS wordpress plugin and then activate it. On Appearance-> Custom CSS, add this css code
.home .post-content{display:none;}
.Thanks. It worked perfectly!
Hello Kris
Thanks for the reply.
As far as the images go, I want the images to come in from the RSS news stories post into the slider, not images I upload.
Is this possible?
Thanks Kris.
Hi Aaron, no this is not possible. Even if the RSS feed itself contained the images (which I don’t think it does), some serious custom coding would be necessary to pull in those images toyour own media library. The slider will only work with images hosted on your own site.
Hi Charles!
Yes, I am running Multisite and “Subsite Activate” was shown in Appearance > Themes along with Network Disable and Edit. After disabling some plugins, that option no longer exists and finally, I am able to see the page number and next buttons on each subsite.
I appreciate your response!
Hello Guys
I do have one more question:
I got my copy of the theme setup as an Auto Blog
pulling in RSS.
How do I get the images to appear in the post and a
BIG image in the slider like you Guys have in the picture
at the top of this site (The Boxers).
If I can get this to work out I it would be AWESOME!!!!
Hope to hear from you soon.
Thank You and God Bless!
If you want to add images appearing in the slider and in the list of posts, just add featured image in each post.
Hello Kris and Charles
Aaron here again.
I just had to share this.
I didn’t need to use the ‘Simple Sidebar’ plugin
to remove the sidebar from specific pages.
This is how I did it… very simple:
All I did was select the page I didn’t want the sidebar
to appear on, hit the edit then over on the right side under
‘Page Attributes’ > ‘Template’ select in the drop down
menu ‘Full-width, no sidebar’ this will get rid of the sidebar.
Thanks for the Help Guys!!!
Hi Charles!
“Subsite Activate” is not working because after clicking on that button, all my sites (the main and subsites) only show a white page, because the theme is broken (message shown), so I have to activate the theme again for each site using the “good theme” in order to fix this (in Appearance => Themes two “The Newswire” themes are shown: the broken and the good one). I want that all my subsites have the same theme including the page number and the next button at the bottom that currently are not shown.
Thank you,
Hi Vic Tom, I’m sorry I don’t understand your question. What is “Subsite Activate”? What do you mean by main site and subsites? Are you running Multisite? If so in what mode? Why is there two versions of the theme showing under Appearance > Themes? Did you create a Child theme?
Hello Kris and Charles
Everything is going GOOD!
Just need to know how to remove these
boxes from the sidebar:
Categories
Latest Posts
Archives
I want to remove them completely
from a few pages on my site i.e. ‘Terms’
‘Privacy’ ‘Contact’ ‘About’ ‘Sitemap’
Now right now in the actual ‘Sidebar Home’
‘Sidebar Post’ and ‘Sidebar Main’ in the
‘widgets’ area, I don’t even see Categories,
Latest Posts and Archives in those ‘Sidebar’
boxes.
Only thing that’s in those, are the text box
widgets with my adsense code in them that’s
all.
And on all the pages of the site, adsense
ads are displayed in that sidebar area.
Now, I have hidden the adsense on a few
particular pages using a plugin called
‘Display Widgets’ in hopes to make it blank
in that area.
So now the adsense ads are not showing up
on the pages I set it to hide, but now I got the
Categories,Latest Posts and Archives there
instead.
I need it blank over there.
How do I get rid of them from the pages I
don’t want them on?
Hope to hear from you soon.
Thank You and God Bless.
Try to deactivate the Display Widgets plugin and check if the other sidebar areas are showing. Then you can try this plugin, Simple Page Sidebars wordpress plugin for creating custom sidebar for specific pages.
Hello Kris
Once again you have gave me THE POWER!!!!!
Got another issue I’m facing:
Okay, I’m using ‘Exclude Pages from Navigation’ plugin .
It works Great.
But I am using a plugin called ‘Site Tree’ for my sitemap.
My problem is it’s not pulling in my ‘Pages’ into the Archive
that I have excluded from the Nav.
Can you please instruct me on how I go about getting those
pages and any future pages I excluded from the Nav Bar to be
included in the Sitemap Archive?
Hope to hear from you soon Kris!
Thank you and God Bless.
Hi Aaron, I’m really glad we’ve been able to help with everything so far. This question though is beyond what we’ll be able to solve here in the comments. To address this will require some serious code customization which we can’t offer to do.
I recommend you reach out to the Site Tree plugin author first and see if they have any easy way to exclude pages from the sitemap. If not then perhaps try Elto or Codeable for some low cost professional coding support.
Cheers
Hello Kris
Thanks for the info, everything worked out GREAT.
Just got one more question:
You already showed me how to change the font size
for the Category titles.
Now how do I change the font size for the Page titles?
Hope to hear from you soon Kris.
Thank You and God Bless.
Hi,
Here’s the css code
body.page .entry-title, body.single .entry-title, .not-found .entry-title{font-size:28px;}
How do I get the Sidebar to show up on all the pages? Not just the home page. Thanks!
Hi Stephanie, the sidebar should automatically show on all blog archive pages and posts, and also on the default static page template. The only page it won’t show on is the full width static page template. You can of course control what widgets appear in the sidebar under Appearance > Widgets.
Does that answer your question? If not perhaps you can provide a link or screenshot to illustrate the problem you are having. Cheers.
I am still confused.
So i understand that the sidebar is on every page. I guess a better way to word my question would be, how do i get the sidebar that shows up on my home page to show up on every other page. It looks like most all the pages just show “categories” in the sidebar. But I want my Ads to be in the sidebar of each page.
Hi Stephanie,
If you go to Appearance > Widgets you will see that there are the following widget areas:
We make these available so that you can control which widgets appear on different page types. This gives you more control, but the trade off is you need to replicate the home page widgets in those other widget areas too if you want them to display there too.
Make sense?
Ohhhhhh, I always wondered. Ok thank you so much!! I am not good at using WP. You’re a lifesaver!
Hello Kris
Thanks for the reply.
I have figured out the Bread Crumbs.
I do have a few other questions:
1. You gave me instructions on getting rid of
date and author using css plugin.
Now what file do I put that line of code in?
2. How can hide the ‘Category’: Site Category,
I just want the word ‘Category’ not to show up.
3. How to adjust the font size of that Category: Site
Category to not be as big?
Hope to hear from you soon Kris.
Thank You and God Bless
Hello,
For number 1 question, Just download Simple Custom CSS wordpress plugin and activate the plugin. Then Under Appearance -> Custom CSS, add the css code.
For number 2, is this the category page you are talking about? Then in the newswire theme folder, locate and open category.php and on line 10 and 11, replace that line of code with this,
For number 3, if you already installed “simple custom css”, then in Appearance -> Custom CSS, add this code,
.category .page-title{font-size:28px;}
Hello again.
I forgot one more question:
How to set up Bread Crumbs , where would I
put the widget.
I want it to show up top possibly between the
Nav bar and Slider.
Thank You.
Are you using a plugin? May I know what plugin you are using?
Hello
How do I remove the date and author from post?
Mainly the author (My WP User Name)?
Hope to hear from you soon.
Thank You and God Bless.
Add this custom css in your child theme or you can download Simple Custom CSS wordpress plugin and add this css,
.single-post .entry-meta{display:none;}
Hello Charles,
Like everyone else on this thread, I think The Newswire is too good to be free, so thanks for that.
I understand you don’t customize the theme yourself, but is there a straight forward way to make the front page (not using a static page) more of a two-column layout?
I already used your previous post to do away with the slider…..
How can I NOT use the ‘masonry’ layout?
If you could weigh-in, I’d be grateful.
Thanks again for a rockin’ contribution to the InterWeb.
Paul
Seattle, USA
Thanks Paul. Glad you like the theme.
Unfortunately there is no straight forward way to make the home page payout a standard two columns. That would require template and style sheet changes beyond the level of support we can provide here in the comments. Elto or Codeable are probably your best bet for low cost professional help on this.
Sorry that’s not the answer you were hoping for.
Hi There,
Absolutely love the theme. It is working wonderfully for us in chrome, but not as dazzling in IE (we are using IE9).
I saw some comments above about this issue, are there any updates I need to install on my end?
Thanks very much!
Hi Michelle, if you have the latest version then there are no more updates available at this time. Can you be more specific about what issues you are having? Cheers, Charles.
Thank you for such a cool WP theme! I’m using this in Japan without any WP knowledge.
It’s very adaptable to Japanese language and Japanese environment.
Only that I don’t understand is why the date stamp on the top menu can not change into Tokyo time. Maybe I must renew some source code to UTC+9 or Asia/Tokyo. Can I change it?
It should be wonderful if this theme were compatible with Translate it button plug in. Then I will be able to press the information about Tokyo to the world.
Hi Yoshihiro, thanks…I am glad you like the theme. The date should be accurate if you have set the timezone correctly under Settings.
Hola, necesito ayuda para ver si es posible hacer que una determinada entrada no se muestre en el slider…no sé si me explico bien. Lo que quiero es que se muestren en el slider solo las entradas que yo quiera.
Un saludo y espero que me podáis ayudar
Yes, it is very easy to control the items that appear in the slider. Simply flag those posts you want to feature as “sticky” posts. If you select one or more posts as “sticky” then they will be the only posts that appear in the slider. We made a how-to video on making posts sticky here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PtNJx-m5_r8
Hello Chuck,
Understandable.
Thanks for the recommendations.
God Bless!
Hello Chuck
My last post went south when I tried to give you the code to look at.
Can you please send me an email so I can give you access to my site
so you can let me know how to proceed?
[email protected]
Thanks Chuck
Hi Aaron, I’m afraid I can’t undertake to look at your site sorry. Both because I’m totally slammed with the day job right now and also because I can’t get involved in making actual changes to sites for free. There is always a risk that something goes wrong and then I’m on the hook and working for free. The best solution would be to find a prefessional freelance WP developer to help. It isn’t a tough job, but if you need professional help I’d go to Elto or Codeable, both great places to find qualified help for cheap (certainly less than I could charge).
Hello
Thanks for the quick reply.
Just got one more issue:
How do I get the ‘Footer’ to show up on ALL
the pages and any new page I create?
It seems to only want to show up on the HOME
page.
Thank you.
Hi Aaron, if you take a close look at the footer.php template you’ll notice that it has some conditional arguments such that the original copyright and theme credit only show up on the home page. Remove this and it will show on all pages.
Hi, I’m having difficulty having the problem section appear for posts. The default comment section didn’t appear when I installed the theme, I then tried to use jetpack’s comment plugin and that also doesn’t seem to work. I checked the allow anyone to register box under general settings, and that also doesn’t seem to be working. I also researched and found out some people had to change their permalinks in order to get it to work and that also doesn’t seem to be the case. I reinstalled wordpress and that also failed. Any ideas?
Hello Edward,
Does everything working fine except for the comment section? Try to deactivate all the installed plugins in your wordpress admin and activate them again one by one to see if you can isolate a problem there.
Hi mate
This theme really is the best one I’ve used, but recently I’ve been messing about with some stuff on it, and I’ve run into a wee problem.
I just split one of my articles into “pages”, and I was wondering how I either edit the numbers at the bottom – to make them bigger – or replace them with a “Next Page” button. Is there a plugin that will do this, or do I need to go digging in the style sheets etc?
That’s not a deal breaker … as long as someone can help me with it!
Thanks again
Hi James, that will require some customization of the style sheet and possibly some template customization. If you do this I recommend you set up your theme as a child first or use a plugin like https://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-custom-css/ to add the custom css so that your local changes are not overwritten by future theme updates.
We made a short video a while back which may help you figure out what part of the style sheet you need to customize: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zSUIm1KrPs
A couple of things I noticed and thought of bringing to your notice in case there is some solution.
1) When we add an image in a post, the image automatically appears as a featured image on the post page, even if we don’t set it as a featured image. Is there any way to leave the home page without any image connected to a particular post but make the image appear only on the actual post?
2) When #1 happens, even after removing the image from the post the image keeps appearing on the home page as if it were set as a featured image. I had to twice delete the images from my media gallery just in order to ensure they don’t appear on the home page. Any solution to this?
