iPage have been in the industry now for over 10 years and are part of the EIG family of brands (including Hostgator, Bluehost and iPage). They tend to focus on the small local business and personal website part of the market with really cheap WordPress hosting starting at $1.99/mth!
iPage Provisioning and Installation
Getting set up with iPage was as fast and easy as any of the standard hosting companies offering Cpanel and easy to use 1-click WordPress installation scripts like Softaculous.
iPage Systems and Support
Like all the EIG companies, iPage offers 24/7 phone and chat support which is really pretty extraordinary for hosting that starts at just $1.99/mth. We used the chat support when we were setting up the iPage review site and found the level one support to be knowledgeable and helpful. Nothing to complain about here.
iPage Load Test
Considering iPage has the cheapest starting price of all the hosts in our review we remain very impressed by their technical performance and ability to handle a lot of users all at once. In our latest round of testing the average user load time in the Load Impact test started out at about 1.2 seconds which is already pretty good, but it quickly dropped to <700MS. We guess that iPage does some network caching of pages and resources, and once that kicked in the site didn’t slow down all the way up to 100 concurrent virtual users. iPage recorded the fastest average Load Impact load time of 0.585 seconds, but we do have to dock some points for the failed requests recorded in the testing…being fast is great, but that doesn’t help if requests on the server are failing. We should say the rate of failure was low, but we need to consider this compared to other hosts which recorded no failed requests at all during the same testing. As with the last round of testing, iPages great Load Impact performance is offset as well by relatively poor performance in our daily Pingdom testing (see below).
iPage Page Speed & Uptime
|West Coast Load Time||1.68s|
|East Coast Load Time||0.965s|
|Average Page Load Time||1.323s|
iPage doesn’t get as good a YSlow grade as some others, but that didn’t stop them from recording reasonable home page load times over the period. Their average was 1.323 seconds this month which is actually a drop in speed since the last test (when they averaged 1.142s), and they did not perform as well as the best performing WordPress hosts.
This company, iPage, hosts about a million sites, and offers a bevy of add-ons to a fairly simple, standard basic hosting package.
In addition to all the standard hosting options, such as dedicated, WordPress, VPS and essential hosting, they offer website management and “e-commerce” services, such as shopping carts, credit card processing and SSL certification. There are also plenty of scripting and add-ons, as well as some marketing services available for a fee.
The company offers unlimited disk space, no limit on the number of domains and MySQL databases and unlimited bandwidth. There’s a free drag-and-drop site building tool for up to six pages, a template-based site builder, a blog setup wizard and photo gallery setup wizard, as well as more advanced technical tools (“Features For Geeks”).
Most web hosting services intent on targeting the small business market offer Google AdWords credit. IPage does as well, and adds on Yahoo!/Bing sponsored search credit, as well as a free Yellowpages.com listing and a free toll-free phone number for United States customers. And iPage offers a full complement of email services, pretty much all for free and unlimited, such as forwarding, autoresponders, virus checking and customizable spam filters.
What’s the basic setup they offer?
iPage offers shared hosting for real budget prices. The iPage Essential Plan is unlimited hosting space, data transfer, and an addon domain for a truly low price.
Is there a money-back guarantee?
Yes, iPage customers get a 30-day full refund trial period upon signup. They also offer customers an Anytime Money Back Guarantee refund policy, where if you cancel your iPage account after the first 30 days, you will still get a pro-rated refund.
What payment methods do they accept?
IPage accepts credit cards (Visa, Master Card, American Express) and PayPal.
What site builder tools do they offer?
IPage offers iPage Website Builder free, and it’s pretty easy to create your site using their Drag and Drop Website Builder. With the builder you can choose the design template you want, and add widgets and other elements that you need for your site.
Is it really unlimited?
As much as any other “unlimited terms” providers: Page provide unlimited hosting service, as in they don’t limit how much you can use as long as it’s reasonable. As company officials say, “There are no set limits on the disk space or data transfer (bandwidth) that we provide in our hosting plans… 99.95% of all customers will have more than enough disk space and bandwidth to meet their needs. That being said, we do require all customers to be fully compliant with our Terms of Service and use disk space and bandwidth in the normal operation of a personal or small business website.”
If you’re using it for storage or file sharing, you’ll have problems with them.
Well, how can they tell, really?
They regularly run customer bandwidth and storage space utilization through a series of statistical analyses and use the results of these studies to define “normal.” Although the actual results of these analyses vary from month to month, one thing remains constant: 99.95% of their customers fall into “normal” range. Customers who fall outside the normal range are usually using their accounts for file storage or sharing, not hosting.
And if I’m not “normal?”
If they have concerns about your account’s bandwidth or storage space utilization, you will receive an email asking you to reduce usage. Generally, they provide customers with a minimum of 48 hours to make adjustments before taking the account offline.
What do they offer in the way of email?
Unlimited email at your domain name, and such standard features as email forwarding, autoresponders, customizable spam filters, virus checking, checking your mail online, the standard stuff. While iPage allows its shared hosting customers to create unlimited mailboxes (i.e., POP/IMAP accounts), each individual mailbox has a storage capacity of 500MB or 10,000 email messages, whichever comes first.
What’s the customer support?
They have an online help center and ticketing system, and offer 24/7 phone, chat and email, saying they answer calls in about a minute. Plus they have step-by-step tutorials, and what company officials say is “rigorous Q&A testing” of support staff.
